DuraFlex Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Wilmington Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible crown repair components for most DuraFlex stainless steel liner systems, with typical installed pricing running $340-$620 depending on liner diameter and whether the top plate needs replacement. Most DuraFlex crown repairs in Wilmington are completed same-day once we verify your model series on site. Homeowners usually catch this failure after a heavy rain, when water starts dripping down the flue, or during a routine sweep when the camera shows rust staining at the liner top where the crown seal has cracked or the storm collar has lifted.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns and top-finish assemblies vary by liner diameter and wall thickness, not by a single model number. The critical identifier is the stamped rating on your liner’s top termination plate: DuraFlex .005″, .006″, or .007″ wall thickness, paired with the nominal flue size (typically 3″ to 8″ round in Wilmington’s older homes). The top plate itself carries a part-series prefix, DFLX-TP or DFLX-CR, that tells us whether your system uses the older bolted storm collar or the newer compression-seal crown.

We carry both OEM DuraFlex termination components and aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Famco through our Haven buying network. For DuraFlex specifically, we default to OEM on the crown body itself, the compression ring, and the storm collar, since the tolerances on the .006″ and .007″ walls are tight enough that off-brand collars often weep in the first hard freeze-thaw cycle. The silicone sealant and fasteners we source from Famco, which meets the same ASTM C920 spec at a lower parts cost we pass through.

Before we order anything, we measure your existing top plate inside diameter and liner projection above the crown. DuraFlex changed the crown base flange depth around 2017, and the newer assemblies sit 3/8″ lower. In Wilmington’s Brandywine neighborhood, where many liners were installed during the 2015-2019 wood-stove boom, we’ve found both versions on homes three doors apart.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing
  • Water dripping down the flue after rain. The DuraFlex storm collar or crown seal has cracked or separated from the liner. On stainless systems this shows as rust-colored streaks on the first visible liner section. We catch this on camera during a Level 2 inspection, and it’s the most common call we get in Wilmington between October and April.
  • White efflorescence or salt staining on the exterior masonry below the crown. This means water is getting past the crown and running down the outside of the liner, not the inside. The DuraFlex top plate gasket may be intact, but the crown-to-flashing joint has failed. Left alone, this accelerates spalling on brick faces.
  • Visible gap or lift at the storm collar base. DuraFlex storm collars are stainless with a silicone compression seal. After five to seven Delaware winters, the silicone hardens and the collar lifts enough to admit wind-driven rain. We check this with a mirror from the roof; if the gap exceeds 1/8″, replacement is past due.
  • Bird or squirrel activity at the termination. A loose or missing DuraFlex crown cap exposes the liner top. Animals compress the wire mesh spark arrestor or dislodge the collar entirely. We document this with photos from the roof and the camera down the flue to check for nesting debris below.
  • Rust particles in the firebox or stove connection. On DuraFlex .005″ light-wall liners, crown failure lets water pool at the liner top. The stainless develops surface rust that flakes down during the next firing season. This is early-stage failure; the liner itself is usually still sound, but the crown assembly needs immediate replacement to protect it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component / Service Typical Range (Wilmington)
DuraFlex crown assembly (OEM), 5″-6″ diameter $180-$260
DuraFlex crown assembly (OEM), 7″-8″ diameter $240-$340
Storm collar / compression seal kit $45-$85
Top plate replacement (if corroded) $90-$140
Labor: removal, fit, seal, documentation $180-$240
Total installed, typical job $340-$620

What drives the range: liner diameter, whether the top plate is salvageable, and roof access. A straightforward 6″ DuraFlex crown swap on a single-story with walkable roof sits at the low end. An 8″ system on a steep third-story slate roof in Wilmington’s Little Italy, where we rig a ladder and work with a spotter, runs higher. We deliver a written price before any work starts, Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, and that price includes the documented photo record required by Clause 4. Every DuraFlex crown repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

You can safely check three things from the ground: whether the cap is present, whether the storm collar looks seated, and whether water stains have appeared on the firebox walls. Use binoculars; don’t climb.

Everything else belongs to a technician with fall protection and flue training. Removing a DuraFlex crown means working at height on a surface that may be wet or moss-covered, then handling stainless components with sharp edges and a silicone sealant that off-gasses until cured. More critically, a misaligned crown on a DuraFlex liner can gap the compression seal without showing visible error, channeling exhaust gases into the chase cavity. Carbon monoxide doesn’t announce itself. We’re background-checked, uniformed, and licensed; you’ll get a text when we’re en route, and the written price before we touch a tool. Call (610) 546-5053.
