Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco has manufactured throat dampers under several product lines over the decades, and the critical detail is whether your existing damper is a cast-iron plate-and-frame assembly or the later stainless pivot-style design. The cast-iron units, common in pre-1990s Wilmington homes especially around the Brandywine and Trolley Square neighborhoods, carry part numbers starting with FD- or FDC-. The stainless pivot dampers use FDP- prefixes and require a different frame depth.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Famco changed the lug spacing on cast-iron frames around 1987. A damper plate from a 1992 FDC-36 will not seat properly on a 1983 FD-36 frame, even though both are nominally 36-inch. We measure lug center-to-center with a tape measure before ordering anything. The label, if it survived the heat, is usually stamped on the frame edge or the handle bracket.

• The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin has corroded through or the cotter pin fell out. In Wilmington’s humid summers, the steel pivot rod rusts inside the cast frame where you can’t see it until the camera goes up.

What you should not attempt is removing a cast-iron frame embedded in high-heat mortar, or working above the firebox without proper scaffolding. The throat sits directly below the flue liner; disturbing it without knowing the liner’s condition risks debris falling into a system you can’t inspect from below.
