The quickest way to identify yours is the tag stamped on the frame edge or the handle stem, which reads either HS-T (throat) or HS-PP (pivot plate). If the tag is rusted off, measure the throat opening: the HS-T series comes in 8″, 10″, 12″, and 13″ widths, while the HS-PP uses a universal 11.5″ plate with adjustable side brackets.

• The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin connecting the handle spindle to the plate bracket has sheared or corroded through. In Wilmington’s humid summers, we see this pin seize with surface rust, then snap on the first hard turn come fall.
• The plate hangs open or closed by several inches. The frame rails have warped from heat cycling, or the plate itself has bowed. HeatShield cast-iron plates are thick, but twenty years of Delaware freeze-thaw with a smoldering fire below will eventually distort the metal.
• You feel cold air dropping even when the damper is “closed.” The plate seal has degraded or the frame has shifted in the mortar bed, leaving a gap. We measure this with a smoke pencil during inspection; anything over 1/8″ gap costs you conditioned air year-round.
• Rust flakes or grit fall when you operate the handle. The frame is exfoliating from the inside out. This is common in coastal Wilmington homes where salt air accelerates cast-iron oxidation, especially on north-facing chimneys that never fully dry out.
• The plate detached completely and is sitting on the smoke shelf. The pivot bushings wore through or the retaining clip failed. This is the end-stage failure; the damper is now inoperable and the fireplace is unsafe to use until repaired.
