Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns and top-finish assemblies vary by liner diameter and wall thickness, not by a single model number. The critical identifier is the stamped rating on your liner’s top termination plate: DuraFlex .005″, .006″, or .007″ wall thickness, paired with the nominal flue size (typically 3″ to 8″ round in Wilmington’s older homes). The top plate itself carries a part-series prefix, DFLX-TP or DFLX-CR, that tells us whether your system uses the older bolted storm collar or the newer compression-seal crown.

We carry both OEM DuraFlex termination components and aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Famco through our Haven buying network. For DuraFlex specifically, we default to OEM on the crown body itself, the compression ring, and the storm collar, since the tolerances on the .006″ and .007″ walls are tight enough that off-brand collars often weep in the first hard freeze-thaw cycle. The silicone sealant and fasteners we source from Famco, which meets the same ASTM C920 spec at a lower parts cost we pass through.

Before we order anything, we measure your existing top plate inside diameter and liner projection above the crown. DuraFlex changed the crown base flange depth around 2017, and the newer assemblies sit 3/8″ lower. Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water dripping down the flue after rain. The DuraFlex storm collar or crown seal has cracked or separated from the liner. On stainless systems this shows as rust-colored streaks on the first visible liner section. We catch this on camera during a Level 2 inspection, and it’s the most common call we get in Wilmington between October and April.
• White efflorescence or salt staining on the exterior masonry below the crown. This means water is getting past the crown and running down the outside of the liner, not the inside. The DuraFlex top plate gasket may be intact, but the crown-to-flashing joint has failed. Left alone, this accelerates spalling on brick faces.
• Visible gap or lift at the storm collar base. DuraFlex storm collars are stainless with a silicone compression seal. After five to seven Delaware winters, the silicone hardens and the collar lifts enough to admit wind-driven rain. We check this with a mirror from the roof; if the gap exceeds 1/8″, replacement is past due.
• Bird or squirrel activity at the termination. A loose or missing DuraFlex crown cap exposes the liner top. Animals compress the wire mesh spark arrestor or dislodge the collar entirely. We document this with photos from the roof and the camera down the flue to check for nesting debris below.
• Rust particles in the firebox or stove connection. On DuraFlex .005″ light-wall liners, crown failure lets water pool at the liner top. The stainless develops surface rust that flakes down during the next firing season. This is early-stage failure; the liner itself is usually still sound, but the crown assembly needs immediate replacement to protect it.
